Children often face the same stressors as adults but without the maturity to cope adaptively. They are complex beings, developing at many different levels at once. They are developing physically, neurologically, emotionally, and socially. In addition to their internal development, they are impacted by their external environment, home, school, and community.
Children who become overwhelmed or lack resilience are ill-equipped to understand challenging situations. Some kids shut down, react aggressively or become increasingly anxious at the prospect of confronting problems.
Indications that your child may be struggling include:
- A sudden change in behavior
- Emotional meltdowns
- Constant crying
- Social withdrawal
- Regression to earlier stages
- Fears and worries
- School refusal, lack of friends
- Aggression and angry outbursts
- Lying and stealing
- Self harm behaviors
As a therapist with many years of professional experience in child counselling, my goal is to help your child or children identify their strengths and take pride in who they are. Through activities like play, art, and games, a safe environment is created where children can talk about their life and learn healthy coping skills.
